What happens at a meditation class?

Each class runs about an hour and a half. It opens with a talk on one of the topics we study, then moves into a guided meditation practice. Techniques are introduced in a gradual, tension-free way: first learning to deeply relax the body and mind, then developing concentration, and from there moving into meditation itself. Because the practices build on each other week by week, regular attendance gets the best results — but you are welcome to come along to any class and try it.

Meditation the gnostic way

Our approach comes from the gnostic tradition, which treats meditation as a practical science of self-knowledge rather than simple stress relief. The aim is to know yourself directly — to still the mind and experience what Gnosis calls the awakening of consciousness. Meditation sits alongside a wide range of topics of exploration, from esoteric psychology to the world's great spiritual traditions. You do not need to adopt any belief to benefit from the practices.

Glasgow meditation FAQ

Are beginners welcome?

Yes. Classes cater to complete beginners as well as experienced meditators, and no previous experience is needed.

When and where are the classes?

Tuesday evenings, 7:00–8:30pm. New courses open on the ground floor of the Theosophical Society, 17 Queen's Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BL; after the first few weeks classes continue at a private venue nearby — contact Scott for details.

How much does it cost?

There is a suggested contribution of £5 a week towards running the centre. Inability to pay never prevents anyone from attending.

What style of meditation is taught?

Guided practices from the gnostic tradition: deep relaxation, concentration, and meditation on self-knowledge, introduced step by step.

Is it religious?

No. Gnosis is not a religion or a church — students of any faith or none are welcome, and the practices ask for no belief, only honest experimentation.
